The first questions most people ask when first building a web site are: How do I get traffic?
How do I get hits on my site?

The answer is search engines, but where do you start?

Everyone wants top listings and results on major search engines. Here is a list of important search engines to consider. Some search engines require payment for top listings such as Overture, while others such as Google.com and DMOZ.com are still free. Here are some general rules, plus information you can use.

How much should I spend on search engines?

You first need to figure out your (ROI) Return on Investment. A simple method is to look at your site stats.
    Example ROI Average:
  • 250 visitors a day average.
  • $157 average net profit a day in sales.
  • Divide Profit by Visitors ($157 divided by 250)
  • Average is $0.62. Your average visitor is worth 62 cents.
  • If you spend an average of 25 cents per pay per click your ROI should be in this example 62 cents minus 25 cents, or 37 cents per visitor.
With this knowledge you can therefore determine how much of your profit you would like to spend on search engine advertising. Never spend more on search engine adverising than your ROI allows no matter how great the terms, because at that point you are just buying business.

How Pay Per Click Advertising Works

Pay Per Click search engines provide online advertisers with a highly efficient, cost effective means of driving traffic to their websites. Yahoo is another huge search engine, and a must for quality web sites to be listed on. However just like Google do not play tricks with Yahoo for higher rankings or you could be permanently removed from the index. Yahoo currently gets many of its results from Google.

You may also join the Yahoo directory for $299 a year. This will give you a chance to have an editor consider your site for a listing. Do not submit your site unless it is a quality site with all links and pages working and full of original content or it may be rejected. Yahoo typically does not accept affiliate sites. DMOZ.org is The Open Directory Project (OPD), and is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors. This is a very important site to be listed in for inclusion in other search engines.

The Open Directory Project is the most widely distributed data base of Web content classified by humans. Its editorial standards body of net-citizens provide the collective brain behind resource discovery on the Web. The Open Directory powers the core directory services for the Web's largest and most popular search engines and portals, including Netscape Search, AOL Search, Google, Lycos, HotBot, DirectHit, and hundreds of others.

The ODP is a Web directory, not a search engine. Although we offer a search query, the purpose of the ODP is to list and categorize web sites.
